Awareness effort puts spotlight on preventive dental care

A new campaign created by Davidson Belluso (D/B) for the First Things First Cochise Regional Partnership Council is raising awareness about the importance of early dental care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Southeastern Arizona.

The Healthy Teeth, Healthy Me™ campaign, centered in Cochise County, focuses on the youngest members of the community – children under five. The effort encourages parents to make a dentist appointment when a baby gets their first tooth or by their first birthday. The campaign is in coordination with Sesame Street in Communities and uses a variety of familiar characters to promote healthy dental habits.

Left untreated, tooth decay in young children’s primary teeth puts them at risk for future problems like damaged permanent teeth; increased vulnerability to infections in other parts of the body, such as the ears, sinuses and the brain; impaired speech development, and reduced self-esteem.

For the campaign, D/B created a landing page with resources, tips, and activities for parents and community members at Teeth.FirstThingsFirst.org. Additionally, the agency has developed digital advertising targeted in Cochise County and a full-scale public relations program including outreach at select community events.

D/B has a long history of public awareness campaigns addressing public health issues for state organizations. Previous efforts include the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Arizona Department of Gaming – Office of Problem Gambling, and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
